BASKETBALL
Scott Guttery grew up in Southwest Florida. He graduated from Bishop Verot High school in 1997 and went on to play college basketball at Centre College in Danville, KY. Scott graduated from Centre College in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science and a major in Psychology. He moved back to Fort Myers in 2001.
Since returning, he has coached JV basketball at Dunbar (2001-2003) and Bishop Verot (2003-2004). He was the head girl’s coach at Bishop Verot for 1 season (2004-2005). Guttery was then hired to start up the basketball program at Ida Baker High School in Cape Coral, FL. He coached there from 2005-2007. Guttery then coached at Fort Myers High School from 2007-2017. In 10 seasons with the Green Wave, Guttery lead the team to a 203-89 record, 9 state play-off appearances, 6 district titles, 4 LCAC titles, 4 trips to the sweet 16 (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013), 3 trips to the elite 8 (2010, 2011, 2013) and a State Championship in 2010.
In 2009 & 2013, Guttery received the FACA district coach of the year award. In 2010, after leading the Green Wave to Lee County’s first ever state basketball title, Guttery was named SFABC (SW FL Association of Basketball Coaches) and Florida’s 4A coach of the year. Guttery also coached the FACA State All-Star game in 2012 & 2013. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Southwest Florida Association of Basketball Coaches.
In July of 2017, Guttery was hired as the head coach and director of basketball operations at Evangelical Christian School. In his 7 seasons with the Sentinels, he has compiled 101 wins and 89 losses. His 101 career wins at ECS make him the winningest coach in school history.
In the past 7 years, Coach Guttery has helped 9 ECS players make it to the college level. In his 20 years of head coaching, Guttery has placed 20 players in college programs.
David Westberry grew up in SWFL and played high school basketball for Coach Guttery at Fort Myers High School. He graduated from FMHS in 2008 and during his senior year led the team to a district and LCAC championship while earning All-Area Honors.
After graduating from FMHS, David went on to continue his education and athletic career at Warner University where he was a 4-year starter and led the team to the NAIA National Tournament as a senior.
After graduating from college in 2012, he started his coaching career as an assistant coach for Warner University where he was the head of player development and recruiting. He spent 6 years (2012-2018) working with the National Basketball Academy as a program director and trainer for the Indiana Pacers Youth Hoops Programs. David has traveled all over the world running basketball camps and training. During his first six years at ECS, Coach Westberry has had a major impact on the development of the players in our basketball program.
In his 7th year at ECS, Coach Westberry will be teaching Middle school PE and assisting Coach Guttery with the Varsity Basketball team.
Coach Don S.Irvine grew up in Somerset, Kentucky, and graduating from Pulaski County High School in 1977. This season will be his 46th season of coaching basketball. He has an AA and BA degree in English, a BS degree in physical education, and a MS degree in athletic administration. Coach Irvine taught middle and high school classes for 28 years and also worked as an athletic Director for 20 years during that time. He was the youngest head basketball coach in the state of Kentucky in 1984 and has coached both boys and girls basketball. His longest stint was at Burgin High School where he spent 18 years and is still the winningest coach in the school’s 100+ year history. He worked in some capacity for nine other schools, including most recently being a volunteer assistant coach at ECS under Coaches Guttery.
Coach Irvine has 395 career varsity basketball wins. He has been married to his wife Nancy for the past 38 years. He has two sons, Zack, age 33, who teaches and coaches in Lexington, Kentucky, and Sam, 30, who works in Gainesville at the University of Florida athletic finance office. Some of Coach Irvine’s awards include being selected to the inaugural Burgin independent schools Hall of Fame in 2022, inducted into the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches Court of Honor, a member of the 12th Region basketball Hall of Fame, numerous regional, area, and conference coaching awards, and a county-wide distinguished teaching award. Don has also served as president of his church Sunday school class for several years.
Chris Ganley grew up in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Chris played football, basketball, and baseball throughout his high school career, during which time he was a part of many playoff teams.
After graduating High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He spent 8 years in the military and has traveled overseas to many countries. Chris was a Primary Marksmanship Instructor and was privileged to teach many high-ranking military officers and enlisted service members how to shoot in both the offensive and defensive mindset while adjusting to different scenarios using various tactics. Many of the service members Chris trained were part of deployment companies being sent overseas.
Once Chris got out of the military, he attended college and graduated from Keiser University with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Fitness Technology. Chris began teaching Physical Education and coaching football, basketball and baseball, which has given him 10+ years of experience in these areas.
Chris will be the JV Basketball Coach at ECS and is currently a PE and weightlifting teacher at the middle school.
Wesney Malbranche, was born in West Hartford, Connecticut and grew up in SWFL. He graduated from ECS in 2022 where he competed in varsity basketball, football, baseball, and track and field. Coach Malbranche played college football at Wittenberg University for a season and is now attending FSW pursuing a Radiology degree.
This will be his second year coaching basketball at his alma mater, ECS. When asked about the upcoming season, Coach Malbranche says, “I love teaching the next generation the game of basketball while also teaching them about Christ and how to be young men in this world. Always expect high intense positive energy from me during games and practice!”
